2024 Emmy Predictions: Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series

"The Crown," "The Gilded Age," and "The Morning Show" being top Emmys contenders are part of what makes the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series race particularly interesting this year.

We will update this article throughout the season, along with all our predictions, so make sure to keep checking IndieWire for the latest news from the 2024 Emmys race. The nomination round of voting takes place from June 13 to June 24, with the official Emmy nominations announced Wednesday, July 17. Afterwards, final voting commences on August 15 and ends the night of August 26. The 76th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards are set to take place on Sunday, September 15, and air live on ABC at 8:00 p.m. ET/ 5:00 p.m. PT.

The State of the Race

“The Crown,” “The Morning Show,” and “The Gilded Age” being three of the major Outstanding Drama Series contenders keeps the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series race extra interesting. All three women-led shows have boasted enough interesting supporting performances over the years to fill up this category on their own. But standing tall above the rest of the crowd is “The Crown” star Elizabeth Debicki, fresh off her 2024 SAG Award win, as the only nominee from last season to be back in contention. It would make sense for her co-star Lesley Manville to get in as well, given how every actress that has played Princess Margaret on the Netflix series has gotten nominated in this category.

Meanwhile, “The Morning Show” actually has never broken into this particular Emmys race, but really hit a stride in its third season in terms of finding women to spotlight outside of the main two stars. Nicole Beharie probably had the most memorable moments in the last run of episodes, and Greta Lee is coming off of a breakout moment post-Oscars season, but there are also women like Karen Pittman that have been on the show from the beginning, and seen their role rise in prominence.

With “The Gilded Age,” it is again a murderer’s row of stage and screen legends, but it is hard not to focus on Christine Baranski here. While she actually has won an Emmy before, it was years prior to her role on “The Good Wife” that made her one of television’s most critically acclaimed actresses.

Elsewhere, the rise of genre television continues, with performances like Adina Porter in “The Changeling,” Sophia Di Martino in “Loki,” and the women of “3 Body Problem” all being seen as contenders this year.

Last Year’s Winner: Jennifer Coolidge, “The White Lotus: Sicily”
Still Eligible: No.
Hot Streak: The possibility that sticks out first and foremost is HBO winning Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, likely for one of the stars of “The Gilded Age.” More likely though, after her SAG Award win, would be Elizabeth Debicki being the second star of “The Crown” to win the category, making it one of only a handful of shows in Emmys history to boast multiple winners.
Notable Ineligible Series: Jennifer Coolidge, Aubrey Plaza, Meghann Fahy, Sabrina Impacciatore, and Simona Tabasco, “The White Lotus: Sicily” (ended); Rhea Seehorn, “Better Call Saul” (ended); J. Smith-Cameron, “Succession” (ended)
