The Gotham Film and Media Institute is getting an even bigger head start on awards season with today’s announcement of its inaugural Gotham TV Awards, which will be presented on Tuesday, June 4, 2024 in New York City. The ceremony will recognize outstanding television series and performances as well as celebrate icons of the industry.

While the new ceremony will be entirely dedicated to TV, it will not mark the first time the 33-year-old Gotham Awards, which happen annually in late November, have honored excellence in television. For a decade, the predominently film-focused awards included three TV categories: Breakthrough Series (Over 40 minutes), Breakthrough Series (Under 40 minutes), and Outstanding Performance in a New Series.

Its Gotham Tributes have also celebrated a diverse array of TV creators including Steve McQueen, Ava DuVernay, and Ryan Murphy. Additionally, the Gotham Film & Media Institute has supported numerous emerging TV creators through its year-round programming that includes Gotham Week, Gotham EDU, Owning It, Expanding Communities, and The Gotham Documentary Development Initiative in collaboration with HBO Documentary Films.

The categories for the inaugural Gotham TV Awards are as follows:

Breakthrough Comedy Series
Breakthrough Drama Series
Breakthrough Limited Series
Breakthrough Nonfiction Series
Outstanding Performance in a Comedy Series
Outstanding Performance in a Drama Series
Outstanding Performance in a Limited Series
Audience Award

More categories are expected to be introduced for recognition by the Gotham TV Awards in 2025.

The Gotham TV Awards nominations will be selected by committees of critics, journalists, programmers, and curators. Separate juries of writers, directors, actors, producers, editors, and others directly involved in the making of TV and film will determine the final award recipients.

Gotham TV Awards submissions will open April 15, 2024 and close April 29, 2024. Nominations will be announced on May 16, 2024, with winners announced and presented on stage on Tuesday, June 4, 2024 in New York City.

“We are proud of our legacy in recognizing the creative community in film and TV, and we have come to recognize that our TV awards could have even greater impact. We sense a unique opportunity to widen our reach by expanding our competitive categories and tributes in a show focused solely on creators of episodic TV, limited series, and non-theatrical streaming movies,” said The Gotham Executive Director Jeffrey Sharp via an official statement.

“This expansive view of the creative landscape harkens back to our founding mission in 1979 to celebrate and nurture independent film and media creators. We believe this awards show could be a launching pad to expand our support of TV creators and continue our longstanding tradition of discovering unique voices and elevating original stories,” added The Gotham Deputy Director Kia Brooks.
