The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and ABC have announced that the 97th Oscars will take place on Sunday, March 2, 2025. Once again, the show will air live at 7 p.m. EST/4 p.m. PST on ABC and in more than 200 territories worldwide from the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood.
Additionally, the organization has rolled out the calendar of key dates for the incoming awards season, including the Governors Awards on Sunday, November 17, 2024; the Oscar Nominees Luncheon on Monday, February 10, 2025; and the Scientific and Technical Awards on Tuesday, February 18, 2025.
One aspect of the calendar most likely to be celebrated is that for the first time in two years the Academy Awards will not take place at the same time as the SXSW festival (which kicks off its 2025 edition on March 7, 2025). Additionally, the Oscar Nominations Announcement on Friday, January 17, 2025 will not overlap with the Sundance Film Festival this time around.
Finally, it’s notable that the Thursday, November 14, 2024 submission deadline mentions RAISE as well, the form producers must submit to prove their film met the Academy’s representation and inclusion standards, and is therefore eligible for Best Picture.
Though the Academy is likely far off from announcing a host, the 2024 Oscars went off without a hitch the second year in a row, even getting a boost in ratings, when emceed by Jimmy Kimmel for the fourth time. Academy CEO Bill Kramer has indicated interest to “engage in multi-year partnerships with producers,” so there is definitely a chance that Kimmel, his producing partner Molly McNearney, executive producer Katy Mullan, and EP/showrunner Raj Kapoor will be asked back.
Some 2024 films already expected to be in the awards conversation include Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune: Part Two” and George Miller’s “Furiosa.”
